11-10-1923 Jennie Mae McArthur Shipp to Caroline J. Peterson

[Letter from Jennie Mae McArthur Shipp to her ex-mother-in-law, Caroline J. Peterson. It was enclosed with Caroline J. Peterson’s letter to Louise C. A. Peterson White, November 12, 1923. Jennie had married Caroline and Edward’s oldest son, Arthur Edward Peterson, in 1906. They separated in 1910 and the divorce was final March 1911. Nine weeks later Jennie married Walter Curtis Shipp. He died in 1914. Audrey is Jennie and Arthur’s daughter.

Per Louise’s daughter, Grace Beverly White Murray, 2010. “My mother just loved Jennie Mae. My grandmother did too. We were all really close to Audrey and her family, especially since we all lived in California. When Audrey was a child, she used to come and stay with Granma & Granpa Peterson every summer.”]

Dearest Momma—

Well it seems a long, long time since I heard from you. I get worse about letter writing as time goes on. Please forgive me. We think about you every day and wonder how you are.

Audrey hasn’t been feeling well for several weeks. She has had a great deal of trouble with her eyes. Have had a specialist treating her eyes, and she has had to remain out of school. She has been home nearly four weeks. She was taken very ill Monday the 5th, and I had to call a doctor at one o’clock in the morning. She was so sick. they had to send an ambulance for her, and take her to the hospital, where an operation for appendicitis was performed. They just got it in time. She was very brave, and came out of it beautifully. She is getting along real nicely, and the doctor says she will be a great deal better in every way. (She hasn’t been real well for along time.)

Now, Momma dear, dont worry about her. She is in the best hospital, and has the best Dr. in San Diego. She has a large front room where the sun shines in on her bed, & she has the best of care. I run up there to see her in the morning before I go to work, at noon & at night.

Would love to hear from you. Hope you are all well. Remember us to Grace & family. The children must be a great help to her by this time. How is little Elvira & Verna? I am well, but feel tired after this ordeal. Will close with much love. Jennie
