They traveled by ship with other LDS Saints, but once they reached New York City, they left the others and boarded a train for Omaha, Nebraska. From Omaha, the three men—all alone—walked the 1000 miles to Ogden, UT. They were the first of the Peterson family to emigrate from Sweden.

Caroline – Caroline Wilhelmina Julin Peterson (1860-1927). Caroline wrote most of the letters in this blog. Caroline was born in Vesteras, Sweden on 24 Jan 1860. She was raised in the city and was well educated.

Caroline joined the LDS Church and left her family as her life had been threatened if she continued to have anything more to do with the Mormons.

She worked for several years and was finally able to immigrate to Ogden, UT in 1882. She met Edward Peterson, another young Swedish immigrant, at a Mutual dance in Ogden and six weeks later they were sealed in the Endowment House by Daniel C. Wells.

Caroline started her married life in Ogden, UT but within a few years the Peterson family was living in Logan, UT. In 1893 Caroline and Edward purchased land in Greenville (North Logan), UT and a year later their family was living in the small house they’d built on their small farm in Greenville. Caroline lived there until her 1927 death.

Caroline and Edward had 7 children, 6 who grew to adulthood. During the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918-1919, she lost 3 of her children within 3 months. This was devastating but she never lost hope or her testimony of the Lord.

Materially, Caroline was poor all her life. Spiritually, however, she was blessed beyond measure. She was a powerful influence for good for many, many people—not only her family, but friends, neighbors, and acquaintances.

They left their LDS traveling companions in NYC and rode a train to Omaha, NE.

Having no more money, and not speaking any English, they put themselves in the hands of the Lord and walked the 1000 miles to Ogden, UT. (see familysearch.org for more details) They were the first of the Petersons to come to UT and worked to help the rest of the family emigrate.

Edward met and married Caroline in 1883. They lived several years in Ogden, UT before moving to Logan, UT. Several years later they were able to buy land in Greenville (North Logan) and the next year they moved into their new little home on their Greenville farm.

Edward farmed, worked for the railroad, and did other jobs to help provide for his family. He, like his wife Caroline, loved to read.

Edward was a good man. He gave land to his sister Johanna when she had no income and had 3 young children to support by herself. Edward was a real character and a wheeler-dealer.

Edward never had any schooling but he was a brilliant, self-educated man. Many’s the time he and President John A. Obie’s childhood was tough, being abandoned by his father, living in poverty with his mother, not getting along with his step-father, and losing his mother when he was just 11 years old. After his mother’s death, he bounced around, living with his Aunt Grace Peterson Johnson and her family in Preston, ID, and also his grandparents, Caroline & Edward Peterson in North Logan.

These events affected Obie and he made some dumb choices as a youth. It didn’t help that his Grandpa Edward was often extra strict with him as he tried to make Obie “straighten up.”

Obie had a great sense of humor but was a pistol! And at times, he was a wayward youth. The Peterson Family Letters reflect the love, concern, aggravation, fear, anger, and all the other emotions that parents feel when their children are struggling.

But through it all, Obie was a loved and a cherished part of the Peterson Family. His life is a testament that even if you have a tough start, and even if you make dumb choices as a youth, it’s never too late to adjust the compass. You can always make changes and have a happy and successful life.
